Comics for Christmas |

My family's starting to ask me what I want for Christmas, because of this I was wondering if anyone has some comic recommendations. I'd like it if you
only listed TPBs, as I don't waste money on HCs.

Invincible
It isn't a basic 'save the day' type of comic, but you get to see the hero behind the mask as he struggles to balance life from young man to young hero. The plot is easy to follow with a sense of being engulfed into the pain and heartache he goes through (Spoiler: With his father). It's a refreshing take on the superhero game. It's been out for a long while and you should be able to pick up Trades from your local comic shop, as well your local library. If there's one gripe I've personally hear from is the artwork which some find it blocky and plain (But I like it because I am bias towards Walker's work). Also it is bloody and gory at times, so just a heads up if that kinda turns you off. Quote: |

I suggest Planet Hulk. And Ultimate Spider-Man: The Clone Saga. Those two make for good TPBs.

Oddly enough... I'm agreeing with Ultra? I don't really like the Hulk character, but I picked up Planet Hulk and fell in love with it <3 Go get it.
Also I haven't read the Clone Saga yet of Ultimate Spider-man, I've only read up to about vol.15/16, but any and all of Ultimate Spider-man is well recommended. I also enjoyed The Ultimates 1&2, volumes 1 and 2 of both series. I don't know so much if you'd call them tpbs or anthologies, but Essential X-Men vol.1-8 are probably my favourite tpbs out. They're the black and white reprints of the X-Men strips from the 70's (with the restart of the X-Men series in Giant X-Men 1 and the introduction of Storm, Colossus and Nightcrawler) up to the late 80s involving classic storylines like Dark Phoenix, Mutant Massacre and Inferno. The comics that are collected in there are probably my favourites and are definitely a time period when Marvel was at its finest. (The 80's Spider-man with the Hobgoblin saga was also awesometastic, but as far as I'm aware it hasn't been reprinted in an Essential collection yet =( ) Also the Essential anthologies should all be cheapish and so definitely represent bang for your buck. Maybe some Runaways would be good. I've only read the first two volumes but it was enjoyable and the series as a whole has had positive reviews.
20th Century Boys Go read it, damnit. |

Actually, The Ultimates was the first comic series I ever read. It's excellent, then Jeph Loeb went and ruined it.

Anything easy to find that you recommend in the comics genre. Also try to leave out really famous ones, like Watchmen or Dark Knight Returns, as I've read
most of them.
